I paint because I am endlessly fascinated by the way light transforms the landscape. A passing cloud, the transparency of water, the warmth of evening light, or how the quiet atmosphere after a storm can turn an ordinary scene into something unforgettable. My goal is not simply to record a place, but to communicate what it felt like to stand there.
Painting outdoors is a passion of mine and, I believe, one that fuels my growth as an artist. I also quietly and deeply believe in its importance. Our work can bring attention to often overlooked beauty and the dire need to preserve this beautiful, diverse terrain in the central coast of California.

Dotty Hawthorne - Pastels

Dotty works in pastel, oil and watercolor. The primary focus in her plein air and studio painting is to celebrate the uniqueness and beauty of the world around her. She has a deep love of nature and enjoys interpreting and celebrating the changing seasons, patterns in the landscape and observing the effects of light. She particularly enjoys plein air painting on location, but also spends hours in her studio completing plein air work, working on larger paintings and painting still lives.

I feel my work shows my passion for the outdoors especially the beautiful scenery here on the Central Coast. I do many paintings from hikes on the Central Coast, but also from trips to the Sierras and the Southwest and Europe.

Laurel Sherrie - Oils

Laurel paints exclusively in oil, which she started in high school. She paints from a deep connection to the landscape. She’s been painting and selling her work for 3 decades, and has works included in several hospital collections where they are accessible to all.
Most of her paintings are begun outside. She sets up her paints at the chosen location, observing and immersing in it as she works to capture the moment on canvas. Sometimes the paintings are finished on location, sometimes in the studio. She is dedicated to using her art to help preserve open land and prevent it from being developed.
Gisele Thompson - Acrylics

Gisele earned a BFA in illustration at Cal State Long Beach and after spending years working as a commercial artist, painting remained her passion and became her voice. She received an MA in painting at Cal State Fullerton and began the journey in acrylic painting that continues today. Now living on the central coast, the inspiration for landscape painting is endless, and she hopes you will find the beauty she sees in both her plein air and studio work.
